As demand for high-quality outpatient care continues to rise, a private equity–backed firm partnered with VMG Health to strategically develop a scalable ASC model in Puerto Rico, starting with a single-site ophthalmology center in Guaynabo.

Situation

Recognizing a revenue-generating opportunity in the growing ambulatory surgery center (ASC) market, a private equity–backed firm set out to build, own, and operate a network of ASCs across Puerto Rico, offering multi-specialty procedures. To test the model, they engaged VMG Health to evaluate the feasibility of launching a single-specialty ophthalmology ASC in Guaynabo.

Solution

VMG Health confirmed the viability of a three-operating-room ophthalmology ASC through a detailed financial analysis. The ASC consulting team then supported planning, design, and launch—developing a compliant, efficient floor plan; customizing regulatory documentation; and recruiting and training staff to align with ASC best practices and patient care standards.

Success

With VMG Health’s continued remote and onsite guidance and support, the first ASC expanded to four operating rooms. Six years later, the client launched a second, larger multi-specialty ASC with six operating rooms and one procedure room, later adding a total joint program. VMG Health was also brought in to support the third ASC—an acquisition and renovation of an existing facility. Services included change of ownership, facility redesign, operational setup, and launch of the new three-operating-room, multi-specialty ASC.

Today, the client is planning a fourth location: a six-operating-room multi-specialty ASC integrated with a 15-room hotel and travel medicine program, positioning itself as a destination for both patients and providers.
